India’s mobile phone market might not be the place to look for the latest technological breakthroughs but it does have some of the most creative niche devices. This is only made possible through Android’s open platform and India’s up and coming innovative and entrepreneurial population.
Micromax has been churning out a series of highly-targeted phones since 2008 and now has an inventory that includes the M2, a device available in canary yellow that looks like a stretched MP3 player and fittingly calls itself “a music player that’s also a phone.” The X395 Convertible switches networks with a shake, and the X505 comes with pre-loaded MTV content.
The Bling 2, a follow-up to Micromax’s Q55 Bling, stands out for its direct appeal to women. Under the
hood there’s little to write about. The device is powered by a 600 Mhz processor, so it’s not going to be the fastest phone on the block.
The screen is just 2.8 inches and 240 x 320 pixels so despite the built-in wifi and apps that include a free month of Mundu Live TV, an Indian channel streamer, it’s unlikely that users will be turning to it for a great deal of multimedia.
The phone does include mobile hotspot capability so users could use that to log on to a device with a more usable screen. The 3-megapixel rear-facing camera too is surprisingly powerful while the front-facing VGA camera will make for some pretty fuzzy video chats.
Other pre-loaded apps include Saavn’s Bollywood music community, MiRoamer’s mobile radio, and Office Suite. The phone also comes with GPS navigation because, as Micromax puts it “Who says women can’t navigate?”
The phone’s most attractive features though aren’t under the hood but on it. The phone has smooth, chiseled edges and a silver back with the word “Bling” emblazoned across the middle. Swarovski Zirconia crystals decorate the camera lens and home button. The device is also sold with a special white leather clutch bag that comes with a built-in compact mirror.
The Bling 2 can hardly be said to push smartphone technology to the limits. The hardware is limited, allowing for only a fraction of Android’s capabilities. The battery is also just a measly 1000 mAh. However, it’s not meant to be powerful. It’s meant to be shiny, sparkly, fun and feminine!
Men can pull out their Droids from their suit pockets and young women can enjoy sliding out the Bling 2, despite its name, from its little leather Satya Paul bag to prove that Android devices don’t have to be only
about power and processing.
