LG Revolution At Verizon Shows the Future of 4G

The LG Revolution is the first Android device to arrive on the market optimized for Verizon’s 4G LTE network. With download speeds of between 5Mbps and 12Mbps and upload speeds of between 2Mbps and 5Mbps — ten times faster than the company’s 3G network — phones running on 4G should be able to make good use of any cloud-based services. LG has certainly cashed in on that potential with a multimedia phone that includes Netflix’s app as a built-in feature.

LG Revolution Basic Specifications

  • Dimensions: 128 x 67 x 13.2mm
  • Display: 4.3 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen
  • Weight: 172 grams
  • Processor: 1GHz processor, Qualcomm MSM8655 Snapdragon
  • Memory: 16GB internal storage with support of up to 32GB microSD
  • Operating System:  Android 2.2, upgradable to Android 2.3
  • Camera: 5MP back-facing camera, autofocus, LED flash, 1.3MP front facing camera
Download speeds contribute partly to a smooth streaming experience. The screen helps too, and the Revolution’s 4.3 inch, 480 x 800 pixel screen is the same size as the Thunderbolt’s, allowing for clear colors and plenty of room to prop up the phone, sit back and watch a movie streaming from Netflix’s servers and delivered with the phone’s Dolby-quality sound.
And if that’s not enough, you can also attach the phone to your television using HDMI cables, turning the device into a streamer for your video club membership or load up movies in a range of formats onto a 32 GB microSD card.
The phone’s other features are impressive too. The rear 5-magapixel camera comes with auto-focus and LED flash, and records HD video in 720p. The front-facing lens is a handy 1.3 megapixels. The phone’s in-built image editor also allows for simple cropping, filtering and adjustments, functions that run surprisingly well on the device’s single-core 1Ghz Snapdragon processor.
On a 4G LTE network, the phone’s hotspot capability allows up to eight wifi-enabled devices to stay connected; five devices can log on using a 3G connection. In addition to the Netflix app, the phone, which runs Froyo but is upgradeable to Gingerbread, also comes with Bing as the default search engine and Maps as the map app of choice. Musicians and gamers will be pleased to find Rock Band and Let’s Golf 2 pre-installed.
And the phone looks good too. Weighing in at a hefty 172g and measuring 128 x 67 x 13.2mm, the device has attractive rounded images and a matte back that gives it a pleasant feel but without a sense of bulk. LG claims the battery will provide 7.25 hours of talk time and 14 days of stand-by time.
The LG Revolution doesn’t look particularly rebellious. It’s not a breakthrough in the way that the arrival of Android shook up the smartphone market. But it does show what phones will look like when 3G no longer rules.
